Miramar has experienced a significant reduction in crime, with a nearly 10% decrease reported for 2025. Police Chief Delrish Moss attributes this improvement to the addition of 51 officers—the largest annual increase in the city’s history—and the implementation of advanced technologies such as predictive analytics and license-plate readers.
Key statistics from the 2025 report include:
- Overall crime down 9.9%
- Property crime decreased by 25.7%
- Murders dropped 70%
- Robberies declined 9.7%
- Rapes decreased 42.1%
- Burglaries down 20.9%
- Thefts from vehicles reduced by 30.2%
- Arson cases decreased 40%
Despite these positive trends, challenges remain in addressing aggravated assaults and domestic incidents. The department has expanded its use of social workers and victim advocates and collaborated with the city to provide safe spaces and houses for residents seeking to leave abusive situations.
Mayor Wayne M. Messam expressed satisfaction with the progress, noting that the department is budgeted for 265 sworn officers, up from 230 in 2023, with approximately 250 currently on staff. Commissioner Alexandra Davis Sherazad inquired about the staffing of the 911 call center with specialists trained to handle sensitive domestic situations. Chief Moss highlighted the department’s social worker and victim advocate programs as proactive steps in this area.
Commissioner Yvette Colbourne praised the downward crime trends and suggested deploying mobile cameras in areas with reported suspicious activity. Chief Moss mentioned the development of a real-time intelligence center and partnerships with businesses and residents to expand the department’s surveillance capabilities.
Commissioner Maxwell Chambers credited both police and residents for the progress, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in crime prevention. Additionally, the Miramar Police Department received its 30th consecutive accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, achieving the highest level.
Chief Moss concluded, “2025 was a good year for us. We plan to press on this year and do even better.”
